A race against time in the year 2,277 on Earth. An object from deep space moves towards Earth with intent. What is its purpose? Is it on a collision course and can Project (M)Earth save the world before it reaches Earth in just over a year and at what cost? Ancient mysticism confronts 23rd century technology and power but no one is prepared for what follows.

(NB – This blog and its contents are fiction. Project (M)Earth is a novel (unpublished) written between 2001 and 2006 and is meant to be for entertainment only. Thich Hanh Tu, all Project (M)Earth’s characters, technology, organisations, concepts and inventions are the creation of this blog’s author as depicted in its source novel, Project (M)Earth)

Helios P Stephem is the richest man in Earth’s history, so rich a new wealth category was invented for him; multi centrillionaire. He owns patents on some of the most successful inventions in history, has developed and made a number of the world’s greatest innovations in use today and has touched the lives of most of the planet’s inhabitants in some way. In our 23rd century  homes, all of us will have at least two items, products or services created by Stephem Enterprises. Some of his more well known products and services are:

NimbAds – A clever system owned by Stephem used for image and advertisement projection onto towering cumulonimbus clouds. More effective in areas of active thunderstorm clouds. Stephem favours the Sumatras, a line of thunderstorms which result from the South Western Monsoon near Singapore and Malaysia

SolAds – Large, ultra‑thin banners deployed in space to deliver advertisements to an Earthbound audience. They sit between Earth and the Sun and operate millions of tiny ports which function on a simple binary principle — open (1) or closed (0). When opened in coordinated patterns, these ports form high‑contrast images and text visible from the surface, conveying messages such as “buy this…”

LunAds – A clever evolution of SolAds. Stephem, although a ruthless entrepreneur who uses his immense wealth to bulldoze his way through the world and force his ideas on a reluctant world decided with his PR team it was a prudent move to re imagine the whole ads from space solution.

Public outcry after the launch of the first SolAds led to the realisation celestial objects and events in space behind these large objects were going unseen and unnoticed, which led to unfavourable criticism as it directly contravened the   longstanding law banning items in space which block views of space and impose their presence:

“49 U.S.C. 70102, is ‘‘advertising in outer space that is capable of being recognized by a human being on the surface of the Earth without the aid of a telescope or other technological device.’’

and constituted an ‘Obtrusive Space Advertising Entity’ to viewers on Earth.

Such bad PR was intolerable for someone in Stephem’s position. To ‘appease the peasants’ Stephem decided to launch his new idea, LunAds which proved to be a genius masterstroke. According to his marketing blurb:

LunAds™ is a new, unique and completely unobtrusive advertising method based in Lunar orbit and can finally bring advertising from space, whilst working within and fulfilling the rules and regulations of governing bodies.  Advertising messages are projected from orbit and displayed on the unlit phases of celestial bodies, in this case the moon. The same projecting system films and transmits ad displays back to devices, AV equipment, 3DVR and 4DVR environments for the enjoyment of the participating public on Earth or elsewhere.

This system is non-obtrusive as the advertisements are projected onto solid opaque surfaces, so allows continued observation of space phenomena as normal beyond the ‘canvas’. LunAds™ does not alter the surface of celestial bodies to reveal messages, it is purely optical.

LunAds™ — as well as advertising — can be used to deliver mass public participation events where results are eagerly awaited. These may include lottery announcements at scheduled times, or even realtime gaming in VR or AR environments. The mobile nature of the delivery spacecraft creates suspense and anticipation as the public wait for events to unfold, or try to spot the projections through high‑powered telescopes. Join me as I launch this elusive, centuries‑old space‑advertising conundrum which I have finally solved.

Such is the influence of the Stephem PR machine, none of his critics has noticed SolAds still litter space.

POLAR – (Polar Orbital Load Ascending Redeployer) comprises two sites located at the geographic North and South Poles replace conventional ballistic launch systems. POLAR is owned and operated entirely by Stephem Enterprises and is used by JÖRD for their launch activity. We have discovered this system was first proposed in the very late 21st century by another visionary Pete ‘ship’ Holmes, but was deemed unworkable at the time. Stephem’s design seems to be identical, but he argues ‘any two orbital lifting systems will inevitably share similar, or identical features if they are to achieve the required functionality’. We have to agree with his statement, but will look into these designs and both inventors further.

Stephem, through his company Stephem Enterprises works closely with JÖRD and has helped finance many space initiatives. One of the high profile projects being undertaken at Stephem Enterprises is Project (M)Earth and is Stephem’s paradigm for eventual terraformation and colonisation of Mars. The resulting terraformed planet will officially be called (M)Earth. Project (M)Earth comprises three phases;

1. EarthLab – based on Earth in the Gobi Desert

EarthLab Gobi Desert Day

Within this self contained biosphere. Stephem believes one of the most successful achievements of this phase was the re-breeding of the near extinct honeybee. Honeybees saw a near extinction of their species during the 21st and 22nd centuries. Although never fully proven, Stephem believed man’s intervention was to blame as the demand for genetically modified and organic produce had a devastating effect on the honeybee species. In changing the genetics of agricultural products, scientists did not appreciate the changes to the honeybee. Its genetic makeup changed to such an extent, it was nearly wiped out. And with the inadvertent introduction of “killer bees” which migrated from South America they almost obliterated the relatively docile honeybee. Luckily Stephem had a fully stocked apiary, which he took into Phase 1 of Project (M)Earth, where the species once again thrived. We are unsure how he sourced this initial supply, but once released into the wild the slow reversal of man’s damage was for all to see. Stephem was heralded as a saviour.

To help the GOBI initiative, Stephem made use of his POLAR technology by employing the same materials and manufacturing techniques to create atmospheric moisture extractors. They were not as tall as the structures which adorned the North and South Poles, but their function was very impressive. Stephem had patented this structure and placed one in the Gobi Desert to assist in the GOBI project and another in the Atacama Desert. Their roles are simple. Be a 15,000ft condensing surface which allows moisture to trickle down to the ground for use by locals. Stephem had transformed this arid desert region of Western South America, ironically situated next to the Pacific Ocean, into a thriving Savannah like landscape. The locals call him the Rain One to this day.

GOBI Atacama Desert

The GOBI initiative in the Atacama Desert transforms the arid desert, ironically situated next to an ocean into a lush, thriving ecosystem. Such structures have been replicated across the globe to help arid areas transform into lively self sustaining oases.

2. LunarLab, based on the moon

LunarLab

Phase two of Project (M)Earth is LunarLab. Placed on the Earth’s moon, it is an international venture and takes all the lessons and discoveries from EarthLab to create a perfectly habitable environment on another planet. This ecosystem has been working successfully for five years. Many new lives had been created in this environment and are subject of much research to find new possible changes in human genetics and physiology due this new environment. In addition to serving as Phase two of Project (M)Earth, LunarLab has many practical uses. Among them its use as a recovery station for astronauts returning from long duration space missions. They start start the reversal of the osteoporosis suffered in a Zero G environment. Once on the road to recovery the astronauts are transported to one of the POLAR stations on Earth. The two day descent allows the body to acclimatise back to terrestrial gravity.

Stephem’s lunar facilities differ greatly from those of JÖRD as they are open to all and heavily subsidised by Stephem Enterprises. Even JÖRD make great use of them.  The nations which make use of LunarLab are great supporters of Stephem’s drive for the final phase of Project (M)Earth – (M)EarthLab. Many have said Stephem took great pleasure in placing his state of the art LunarLab complex next to the smaller, aged, seemingly inferior JÖRD offering as a show of his superiority. Stephem has neither denied nor confirmed this.

3. (M)EarthLab

(M)Earth Lit

Still awaiting formal approval of the GN, (M)EarthLab will be the culmination of the previous two phases, resulting in the full terraformation of Mars, the resulting planet will be (M)Earth.

With the newly discovered object on a course for Earth, focus has shifted towards the successful removal of this threat. Stephem Enterprises is working with JÖRD and has also taken on the services of Eric Carpenter, one of the object’s discovering astronomers to oversee these activities. Helios P Stephem sees this as a very high priority and unusually has made himself available to Eric Carpenter to ensure all which is required is provided.

During our research we have only been able to uncover limited information about Helios P Stephem. We are currently limited to this information, but may need to call on more invasive techniques if required. From what we found so far Stephem is a graduate of the University of Life, his own cunning and instinct guided him through the minefields of business and life. His diverse interests served him well and he totally immersed himself in whatever he chose to do. This was reflected in his countless inventions, investments and businesses in many different areas. His philanthropic ventures are well known and filter through to Stephem Enterprises.

To complement his abilities, Stephem speaks thirty languages, fluently. This skill he has used to his advantage, conducting his business negotiations in the native tongue of those with whom he deals. As well as the classic languages, he is fluent in many ancient and in some cases forgotten dialects including Sanskrit, Latin and Aramaic. His ability to amaze prospective international business partners has always been legendary. During meetings, no one questions his skills and are grateful he shows them this high level of respect by making the effort to communicate fluently in their language.

We found a story which seemed to suggest the origins of the patient stealthy part of his personality which he has used with ruthless effect in business. Many people were convinced it developed as he grew up. Nearly everyone he met mispronounced his name as Stephen or Stevens. Although it irritated him in his younger years, the patient side of his personality which seemed to lead to his killer business instinct was accredited to the constant daily corrections to the various mispronunciations of his name. Although frustrated, he never seemed to loose his temper. A trait which serves us well as Buddhists.

He is a source of fascination for the public. Many unsubstantiated theories have evolved which could help explain his wealth. One such theory explains his tenacity and resourcefulness being attributed to his tough upbringing. Although never proven, it was widely reported as a child, he spent years travelling from orphanage to foster parents and carers. He was a troubled youth and no parents have ever been identified.

In his early twenties Stephem started on this road to extreme wealth by patenting inventions and protecting ideas. His main expertise was advertising and finding unusual media to display messages. He started with NimbAds. Many of the very stable stratiform clouds provided a smooth “solid” medium for advertising messages. Stephem patented the equipment and techniques. He applied these techniques to the Towering Cumulonimbus clouds of the tropics, particularly the ‘Sumatras’ and mastered the use of ’sprites’ which emanate from the thunderstorm cloud top tens of thousands of feet high in atmosphere, prior to the lightning bolt discharge from the cloud’s base. Satellites detect this and halt the commercial being played, for the duration of the sprite and the lightning bolt. Stephem’s commercial continues straight after. He described it as a commercial break for nature, during his commercial break. This era of Stephem’s entrepreneurial career earned him the reputation as the “man with his head in the clouds”.
